Snow in Texas…Again!

I can’t believe we managed to have a second snow day, and I definitely couldn’t have imagined it turned out like it did. I know this blog post is coming pretty late for this topic, we’ve been busy around the house preparing for Kane and working on lots of other projects. More blog posts on those to come, with lots of updates on the house, our family, and other random projects we’ve been working on.

As most of us already know, there was a crazy snow storm over Valentine’s Day weekend. More snow fell over those few days than I think I have ever seen in Texas. It led to tons of people in Texas losing power for days on end. Even today many people’s lives have not yet returned to normal as homes flooded and some utilities are still struggling getting water operations working again.

Chewie bundling up as we let our house get cooler to conserve energy

We were incredibly fortunate. We did not end up losing power for the duration of the week. Michael drove to get Bekah’s sister from Fort Worth to stay with us as she lost power and her pipes froze over. Most of our other family members and friends had “rolling” blackouts or just overall unreliable power.

the Tom Thumb had a generator to run some lights and a few checkout stations.

Many places around us lost power. We only really ventured out of our house to pick up Bekah’s sister. We stopped to get some groceries at a local Tom Thumb to top off supplies and maybe get a couple of comfort treats. They were only selling dry goods as they were unable to run their coolers. It was surreal walking through the store with nothing on the cooled shelves, almost all the lights off, and all the normal sounds replaced with quiet. They had a generator able to run lights around the checkout area and a few of the checkout stations operational.

Ice forming on top of my pool, while it was running!

We really dodged a bullet not losing power, especially when it comes to the pool equipment. Many people lost power and didn’t manage to clear their pool equipment, or the pool equipment quickly froze over. So many pumps, heaters, and lines were broken over that week. Even with the pump running the pool managed to build up this sheet, getting close to half an inch thick. The local pond froze over pretty good, but I didn’t dare risk testing how thick that ice truly was.

Who would have thought this pond would freeze like this.
